It’s (Warrnambool) showtime…
What a fantastic weekend it has been for Fruit Rescue taking out five ribbons at the Warrnambool Show.
Our winners included:
Tamarillo Jam
Fruity Marmalade
Tomato Relish
Jar of Quince Jelly
Jar of Olives
While our recipes remain top secret, we’re excited to share that all the produce used in these winning entries was rescued from backyards around the district. This initiative not only helps reduce food waste but also promotes community engagement and sustainability.
Although we don’t seek outside recognition, it was a joyous moment when we shared the good news with Peter, a humble local who has been instrumental in teaching us how to make a variety of jams, marmalades, and fruit butters. Anyone who has attended the Koroit Community Produce & Plant Swap knows just how delicious Peter’s preserves are. He is always willing to share his knowledge and creations, expecting nothing in return—except perhaps for some empty jars!
Peter had never entered a show before and was understandably nervous when he asked if we could help facilitate his entries. Of course, we jumped at the chance. We added some olives and fruit jelly made during our workshops this year to the pool, resulting in every entry receiving a prize.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the amazing volunteers who organize the show. We are grateful for all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to create opportunities like this for local producers and community members.
If you’re interested in getting involved or want to learn more about our efforts to reduce food waste while fostering community connections, consider volunteering or sharing our Facebook or Instagram page. Together, we can make a difference in our local area by rescuing fruit and sharing it with those in need.
Here’s to more delicious creations and community spirit in the future!
