Our impact: transforming community food sustainability

In its inaugural year, Fruit Rescue has emerged as a transformative community-driven effort tackling food waste across South West Victoria.

The organisation has redirected surplus fruit from local orchards and backyard trees, creating a powerful model of sustainable community support.

In completing the first full year of operations, Fruit Rescue has released an impact report detailing the outcomes of the project.

Director Courtney Mathew explains the project's core mission: "We're not just rescuing fruit; we're building stronger, more resilient local food systems."

By partnering with organisations like Western District Food Share, Anglicare, and the Salvation Army, the team has prevented valuable produce from going to waste while supporting community members who may be experiencing food insecurity.

The program extends beyond simple fruit collection, offering tree health checks, pest identification, and pruning guidance.

Volunteers have learned food preservation techniques, creating delicious jams and conserves that have even won awards at local agricultural shows. These activities have not only reduced food waste but also fostered meaningful community connections.

With a focus on sustainability and local engagement, Fruit Rescue has become a key player in the districts community food security landscape.

The organisation aims to expand its reach, targeting three tonnes of fruit to rescue in the upcoming season and inspiring more locals to get involved in this innovative community initiative.
