The need for Fruit Rescue

It doesn’t matter which way you slice it, there is a need in Warrnambool and surrounds for Fruit Rescue. Here are a few reasons how we help the region:

Reduce food waste: Food waste is a global issue, and fruit is often among the most wasted food items. Fruit Rescue helps reduce this waste by collecting surplus or unused fruits from homes, farms, and public land, preventing them from ending up as waste.

Food security: We provide fresh, nutritious fruits to people and families in need through community partners like Western District Food Share and Anglicare Victoria. By redirecting surplus fruit to community organisations, these groups contribute to improving food security and reducing hunger in our community.

Environmental impact: Food waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions when it decomposes on the ground. By rescuing and redistributing fruits that would otherwise be wasted, we help reduce the environmental footprint of food production and disposal.

Community building: We work to bring community together. Volunteers play a crucial role in collecting and distributing surplus fruit, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose. Through volunteering, people can meet new friends and forge deep and meaningful relationships.

Health and nutrition: Fresh fruit is a vital component of a healthy diet. By providing access to fresh, locally sourced fruits, we promote better nutrition and overall health in the community.

Supporting food sharing is more than nourishment; it's a lifeline for those struggling. It embodies the compassion of a community that understands that no one should go hungry. It's a reminder that amid adversity, there are hands outstretched with food, hope, and solidarity.
